- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Younger age where mammography is less effective
- A need for targeted evaluation of a specific breast concern
All diagnostic breast ultrasound exams are performed by a registered breast sonographer using professional ultrasound equipment and established scanning standards. All breast ultrasounds are read by a board certified radiologist.
Why Ultrasound Is an Important
Breast Imaging Option
Ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool in breast imaging and does not use ionizing radiation.
Ionizing radiation interacts with human tissue at the cellular level, and exposure is cumulative over a lifetime. Because breast tissue is considered radiosensitive, medical imaging principles emphasize limiting radiation exposure whenever possible and using radiation-free imaging methods when they can provide appropriate diagnostic information.
In clinical practice, breast ultrasound is commonly used to further evaluate findings seen on a mammogram or when mammography is inconclusive — particularly in patients with dense breast tissue, focal pain, or a palpable concern. Ultrasound provides real-time imaging that can characterize breast tissue and guide next steps without additional radiation exposure.
By using sound waves rather than ionizing radiation, ultrasound can be safely repeated when medically indicated and plays a critical role in modern diagnostic breast care.
The Science Behind Radiation and Breast Tissue
- Ionizing radiation damages DNA
- DNA damage can lead to mutations
- Mutations can contribute to cancer development
- Radiation risk increases with cumulative exposure over time
- Breast tissue is considered radiosensitive
- Mammography uses low-dose ionizing radiation
For this reason, radiation-free imaging modalities such as ultrasound are an important component of breast imaging, particularly when additional evaluation is needed.
