This mobile ultrasound FAQ answers common questions about our diagnostic and elective at-home ultrasound services, including appointment policies, payments, and what to expect.

Kicks & Flutters Mobile Ultrasound operates as a self-pay practice and does not accept insurance, Medicaid, or Medicare.
To ensure availability and dedicated appointment time, payment is required at the time of booking.
Appointments are confirmed once payment is completed.

What if my baby doesn’t cooperate during the ultrasound?

Every ultrasound experience is unique, and baby positioning can vary from moment to moment. While I use advanced techniques and years of experience to encourage optimal views, some babies may not move into ideal positions during the session.

Because time, expertise, and equipment are fully dedicated to your appointment, refunds are not offered for fetal positioning or limited views.

Each session is approached with patience, care, and a focus on creating a positive and memorable experience.

Yes — absolutely. I bring professional-grade, portable ultrasound equipment directly to your home or chosen venue and handle the full setup for your appointment. A comfortable massage table is provided for all exams.

For obstetric ultrasound appointments, the ultrasound system can be connected to your smart TV (if you do not have a TV available, one can be provided for your session), allowing you and your loved ones to view your baby on a larger screen. This creates a relaxed, private, and meaningful experience in a familiar environment.

There is no limit on who may attend obstetric ultrasound sessions, and partners, siblings, grandparents, and family members are welcome. You may also take photos or videos during OB sessions if you wish.

For diagnostic breast and general ultrasound appointments, the focus is on medical imaging and clinical evaluation. These exams are performed professionally and privately, with careful attention to comfort and positioning. Viewing the exam on a screen is optional and available for the patient if desired. These studies are performed for medical evaluation, with the primary focus on accurate imaging and interpretation.

Every appointment — obstetric, breast, or general ultrasound — is performed with care, attention to safety, and a strong focus on comfort, including the use of warm gel, professional technique, and unhurried imaging time.

Pregnancy Ultrasound: As early as 6 weeks and continuing throughout pregnancy, up to term. No order needed.

Breast Ultrasound: Available at any time. Safe for breast feeding moms and during pregnancy. No order needed.

General Ultrasound: For pain, new or chronic symptoms, or for follow-up from previous imaging. No order needed.

For pregnancy ultrasounds, what you’ll see depends on gestational age. An at-home appointment can provide an in-depth look at your baby’s heartbeat, growth, face, hands, feet, heart activity, and gender (if desired) — and so much more as your pregnancy progresses.

Yes! Your in-home ultrasound appointment includes digital images and videos of your baby. Printed images are available for purchase.

Make sure you are well hydrated with water or non-sugary drink. It also helps to eat a healthy snack (quality protein is great) before your appointment so your baby is active but not hopped up on sugar and constantly wiggling or moving. We are looking for a perfect balance of being active but cooperative.

You do not need a full bladder unless you are between 6-10 weeks.

*We do offer transvaginal ultrasound if needed.

Very little preparation is needed for a breast ultrasound.

Please wear a two-piece outfit so you can comfortably undress from the waist up. On the day of your exam, avoid applying lotions, oils, deodorant, or powders to the breast or underarm area, as these can interfere with image quality.

You may eat and drink normally before your appointment. No fasting is required.

If you are breastfeeding, you should breastfeed or pump approximately 15–30 minutes prior to your appointment. This helps reduce breast fullness, improves comfort, and allows for optimal imaging quality during the exam.

A full bladder is not needed for breast ultrasound. The exam is performed with you comfortably positioned, using warm gel and careful, professional technique to thoroughly evaluate the breast tissue.

Gender can be determined at 14 weeks if the baby is cooperative and in an adequate position. Please note, gender determination is more reliable if you wait until 16 weeks.

Usually, the best 3D/4D/5D ultrasound images are taken between 28-36 weeks however, this does not mean we can’t get quality 3D/4D/5D images before 28 weeks or past 36 weeks. We have been successful in obtaining quality 3D/4D/5Ds at 40 weeks as well as some adorable 1st trimester 3D/4D/5D!

Ultrasound has been used safely in medical imaging for decades in pregnancy, breast, and general evaluation. It works by using sound waves — not radiation — to create images of the body. There is no exposure to X-rays, and ultrasound has not been shown to cause harm when performed by a properly trained professional using appropriate medical settings.

At Kicks & Flutters Mobile Ultrasound, all examinations are performed by Kimberly Fielding, RDMS (OB/GYN, BR, AB), RDCS (FE), RVT, a registered and experienced sonographer with advanced training in obstetric, maternal-fetal medicine (MFM), breast, and general ultrasound.

Each exam — whether obstetric, breast, or general — is performed thoughtfully and professionally, using medically appropriate settings and only for the time needed to obtain clear, meaningful diagnostic or clinical images.

2D, 3D, 4D, and 5D ultrasounds all use the same safe sound-wave technology. Advanced imaging simply applies additional computer processing to enhance image detail — it does not increase exposure.

A two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound is a flat ultrasound, giving outlines and showing shapes. This is the most commonly used type of ultrasound generally used to determine pregnancy, measure baby’s growth, measure heart rate, and it can also be used to view the baby’s internal organs.

A three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound gives a more life-like appearance to the baby in the womb. 3D ultrasounds allow expectant parents to get a better idea of what their baby looks like, because unlike the flat 2D ultrasounds, 3D ultrasounds give more shape and identity to the baby. We can also do 3D imaging on baby’s hands and feet which are super cute too!

A four-dimensional (4D) ultrasound is essentially a moving version of a 3D ultrasound, just like a 3D video (the 4th dimension is for the addition of real-time).

A fifth dimensional (5D) ultrasound takes the magic of 3D and 4D scans to the next level. It uses special technology to automatically enhance the color, lighting, and detail so you can see your baby’s features more clearly than ever before. You’ll enjoy lifelike images with natural skin tones, making it easy to spot tiny smiles, yawns, and movements in real time. It’s a truly unforgettable way to bond with your baby before they’re born

An 8K enhancement transforms your 3D ultrasound photo into an ultra-realistic keepsake image using advanced computer processing. The software refines lighting, depth, and facial features to create a clearer and more lifelike appearance. The 8K image is created from your original 3D ultrasound but is not a medical ultrasound image. It is a computer enhanced rendering designed as a beautiful keepsake while still reflecting your baby’s features.
