Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to create images of the breast without radiation. This allows the sonographer and radiologist to closely evaluate breast tissue and better characterize findings that may need further assessment. Breast ultrasound utilizes high resolution medical ultrasound equipment to assist in the evaluation of certain breast concerns including palpable areas, focal pain, swelling, follow up recommendations, and other non-emergent breast related symptoms.

Breast ultrasound can be especially helpful for women with dense breast tissue and is also ideal for women with sensitive breasts, as well as those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Our medical breast ultrasound examinations are performed in the comfort of your home by Kimberly Fielding, RDMS, a registered diagnostic medical sonographer experienced in breast imaging and women’s health ultrasound.

All medical breast ultrasound studies are interpreted by a board-certified radiologist. Finalized ultrasound reports may be securely provided to the patient and/or the patient’s healthcare provider as appropriate.

Breast ultrasound is an adjunct imaging modality and does not replace breast MRI, physician evaluation, biopsy, clinical examination, or additional imaging when clinically indicated. While ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool, no imaging study can detect all abnormalities or guarantee the identification of every condition.

Patients are encouraged to continue routine medical care, recommended breast screenings, and follow up with their physician or qualified healthcare provider regarding any symptoms, concerns, abnormal findings, or persistent changes in breast tissue.

Complete Diagnostic – Bilateral (Both Breasts) - $450

A complete bilateral diagnostic breast ultrasound provides a comprehensive evaluation of both breasts, axillae, and nipple ducts. This exam is commonly used to assess:

Dense breast tissue
A palpable lump
Focal breast pain
Abnormal mammogram findings
Pregnancy or breastfeeding mothers
Targeted evaluation of a specific area

Using professional ultrasound equipment and established scanning standards, this exam helps identify cysts, solid masses, and other breast conditions — supporting early detection and informed medical decision-making.

All exams are performed by a registered breast sonographer and interpreted by a board-certified radiologist. Final reports are typically available within one week.

Travel up to 90 minutes round-trip from Whites Creek, Tennessee, is included in each at-home ultrasound. Travel beyond 90 minutes is charged at one dollar per minute for the additional travel time.

Why Ultrasound Is an Important Breast Imaging Option?

Ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool in breast imaging and does not use ionizing radiation.

Ionizing radiation interacts with human tissue at the cellular level, and exposure is cumulative over a lifetime. Because breast tissue is considered radiosensitive, medical imaging principles emphasize limiting radiation exposure whenever possible and using radiation-free imaging methods when they can provide appropriate diagnostic information.

In clinical practice, breast ultrasound is commonly used to further evaluate findings seen on a mammogram or when mammography is inconclusive — particularly in patients with dense breast tissue, focal pain, or a palpable concern. Ultrasound provides real-time imaging that can characterize breast tissue and guide next steps without additional radiation exposure.

By using sound waves rather than ionizing radiation, ultrasound can be safely repeated when medically indicated and plays a critical role in modern diagnostic breast care.

Do You Accept Insurance?

No — diagnostic breast ultrasound services are self-pay. Insurance is not accepted.
HSA/FSA cards are accepted depending on your plan and payment processor.

Do I Need a Mammogram First?

No. Ultrasound is a safe and effective alternative to a mammogram for those who are conscious about radiation exposure.

Is There Radiation?

What Happens if Something Concerning is Seen?

You’ll be guided to the appropriate next step by the radiologist, which may include additional imaging (such as mammography, MRI, or biopsy) and/or clinical follow-up with your ordering provider.

How do I prepare for a breast ultrasound appointment?

Very little preparation is needed for a breast ultrasound.

Please wear a two-piece outfit so you can comfortably undress from the waist up. On the day of your exam, avoid applying lotions, oils, deodorant, or powders to the breast or underarm area, as these can interfere with image quality.

You may eat and drink normally before your appointment. No fasting is required.

If you are breastfeeding, you should breastfeed or pump approximately 15–30 minutes prior to your appointment. This helps reduce breast fullness, improves comfort, and allows for optimal imaging quality during the exam.

A full bladder is not needed for breast ultrasound. The exam is performed with you comfortably positioned, using warm gel and careful, professional technique to thoroughly evaluate the breast tissue.
